Jigwido sits four kilometres off Namwon on Jeju's south-east shore and takes the full force of the Tsushima current, which is exactly why it is worth the crossing: the walls are covered in soft coral to a degree that surprises divers who expect temperate water, and the fish are bigger than they are inshore. Striped beakfish work the rock in numbers and the occasional Asian sheepshead wrasse comes out of the deeper edge. The current is the catch — it runs, and this is a site dived on the slack with a boat that knows it.

Past 30 m, where no-stop time and gas both go quickly and nitrogen narcosis starts to show.
