A sheltered harbour reef that is diveable when the outside of the island is not, and good enough to dive for its own sake.

Gab Gab sits inside Apra Harbor, which is the whole point of it: when swell shuts the exposed coast, this is open. A coral shelf runs from about 5 m down to a sand slope in the low twenties, with a mooring chain descending through the blue as the landmark everyone navigates by. It is where Guam teaches, so expect classes — and it is also one of the better macro dives on the island, with cuttlefish, garden eels out on the sand and enough on the shelf to carry a night dive. Access is through a naval base and has to be arranged by an operator.

Inside Apra Harbor on the US Navy base; entry is arranged by a local operator, not independently.

Best season

  • Good

Before you get in

  • A night site. A backup light and a navigation plan matter more than usual.

Taken from this site’s recorded depth, type and current, and nothing else. An empty list is not a safe site — the sea on the day, the local geography and the boat traffic are not in it. The briefing on the spot comes first.
