Hon Mun sits at the mouth of Nha Trang bay and became Vietnam’s first marine protected area in 2001. The diving is shallow, mostly 5 to 18 m over hard coral and boulders, with visibility that swings with the season and with what the rivers are doing. It is not a big-animal destination and does not pretend to be. What it has is nudibranchs, shrimp, cuttlefish, anemonefish and the kind of reef where an hour goes quickly if you like looking closely — and it is where most Vietnamese divers are certified. February to September is the window; the north-east monsoon makes winter a gamble.

Twenty-five minutes by boat from Cau Da pier, south of Nha Trang.
