Humpbacks migrate from Antarctica to the warm shallow water around Vavaʻu to give birth and to breed, and they are here from about July to October. Tonga is one of a small number of countries that licenses swimming with them, and the rules are the point: a licensed operator, four people in the water at a time with a guide, a set distance, and a mother with a new calf left alone if she wants to be. This is snorkelling and freediving — no scuba, because bubbles end the encounter — so the depth is whatever you can hold your breath for beside an animal fifteen metres long. Nobody can promise it. It is worth the flight anyway.
