Palancar is a long series of coral formations off south-west Cozumel, split by operators into Gardens, Horseshoe, Caves and Bricks. Visibility is routinely over 30 m and the current does the work — divers drift and the boat follows the bubbles. The swim-throughs are wide and naturally lit. It is a classic first "big" reef for newly certified divers, though the drift technique needs briefing.
Boat from Cozumel town, 20–40 minutes depending on section.

Before you get in
- A cavern — inside the daylight zone, but still with a ceiling, and with stretches where you cannot simply go up.
- Past 30 m, where no-stop time and gas both go quickly and nitrogen narcosis starts to show.
- A drift dive: you do not come back to where you went in, so boat pickup and an SMB are part of the plan rather than extras.
Taken from this site’s recorded depth, type and current, and nothing else. An empty list is not a safe site — the sea on the day, the local geography and the boat traffic are not in it. The briefing on the spot comes first.
