Ulleungdo is a volcano rising from 2,000 m of water with no river and no city on it, and the result is visibility Korean divers travel a day to reach — 20 m is ordinary in late summer and 30 m happens. Jukdo is the small island off the east coast, and the walls drop clean from the surface into cold blue. This is a rock-and-fish dive rather than a coral one: beakfish, sheepshead wrasse, rockfish, and water that lets you see all of them. The ferry is the hard part and cancels in swell.

Ferry from Mukho, Hupo or Pohang, two and a half to three hours, then boat from Jeodong harbour.
