Mary’s Place is a fissure in Roatán’s south wall, opened when the volcanic shelf fractured. It runs roughly parallel to the reef, deep enough to swim along with walls on both sides and the reef closing over your head in places. Black coral, rope sponge and orange elephant ear grow out of the sides at eye level, close enough to touch, which is exactly why nobody should. It is narrow: groups go through one at a time and buoyancy matters far more than depth does. The marine park has rested the site before to let it recover, and access is capped at a set number of dives a day, booked through operators.

Boat from the south shore near French Harbour; most Roatán operators run it as a two-tank morning.

Before you get in

  • Past 30 m, where no-stop time and gas both go quickly and nitrogen narcosis starts to show.
  • A wall. There is no bottom in sight to judge against, so depth is kept by the gauge alone — and it is easy to end up deeper than intended.

Taken from this site’s recorded depth, type and current, and nothing else. An empty list is not a safe site — the sea on the day, the local geography and the boat traffic are not in it. The briefing on the spot comes first.
