The Messinian Gulf drops past 100 m within sight of Kalamata's seafront, and the water is flat enough often enough that a competition line can be rigged and left. AIDA depth events have run here for years and training camps run all summer: warm water, no current to speak of, a short boat ride, and depth available in whatever increment a diver is working through. It is not a reef dive and nobody comes for the fish — it is a line in open blue with a safety team on it, which is the thing that is hard to find.

Boat from Kalamata marina, ten to twenty minutes. Freediving schools rig the line; there is no shore access to depth.

Before you get in

  • Deeper than recreational limits. It carries a decompression obligation and gas planning, and is not a dive to plan without that training.
  • A wall. There is no bottom in sight to judge against, so depth is kept by the gauge alone — and it is easy to end up deeper than intended.

Taken from this site’s recorded depth, type and current, and nothing else. An empty list is not a safe site — the sea on the day, the local geography and the boat traffic are not in it. The briefing on the spot comes first.
