The Blue Hole is a shore-entry sinkhole about 100 m deep, separated from the open sea by a shallow saddle. Dived as intended — over the saddle at 6 m and along the outer wall — it is a straightforward and beautiful recreational dive with excellent coral. Its reputation comes from the Arch, a tunnel at 55 m that has killed a large number of divers attempting it on recreational gear and training. Those two dives share a name and nothing else. It is also one of the world's main freediving training sites.

By road north from Dahab, about 15 minutes; entry directly from the shore.

Before you get in

  • A cavern — inside the daylight zone, but still with a ceiling, and with stretches where you cannot simply go up.
  • A wall. There is no bottom in sight to judge against, so depth is kept by the gauge alone — and it is easy to end up deeper than intended.

Taken from this site’s recorded depth, type and current, and nothing else. An empty list is not a safe site — the sea on the day, the local geography and the boat traffic are not in it. The briefing on the spot comes first.
