A shallow sand bank off the west end of Grand Bahama, and the reason to come is tiger sharks — large females, at arm’s length, in water bright enough to see everything coming. It is a baited dive, which is the honest word for it: the sharks are there because a crate of fish is there, and the whole encounter is built on an operator running it properly, with divers kneeling in a line, a safety diver behind the group, and a shark wrangler redirecting animals by hand. Lemon and reef sharks are there in numbers too. Nothing about this is a first shark dive, and an operator who sells it as one is the risk, not the shark.

A two-hour boat run from West End on Grand Bahama, or by liveaboard out of Freeport.
