There are sixty-seven steps, not a thousand — the name is what they feel like carrying tanks back up. The reef starts within a few fin kicks of the entry, runs along a shallow shelf at 5 to 8 m and then slopes past 30. Bonaire’s whole model of diving is visible here: a marked roadside pull-off, a numbered site, your own tank and your own plan, no boat and no guide. The marine park has protected this coast since 1979 and it shows in the hard coral. Lionfish are the exception — introduced to the Atlantic, hunted here, and the one animal divers are asked to report rather than admire.
Drive north from Kralendijk on the coast road; the site is marked by a painted yellow stone at the roadside.

Before you get in
- A wall. There is no bottom in sight to judge against, so depth is kept by the gauge alone — and it is easy to end up deeper than intended.
Taken from this site’s recorded depth, type and current, and nothing else. An empty list is not a safe site — the sea on the day, the local geography and the boat traffic are not in it. The briefing on the spot comes first.
